All Sin is Selfishness

Selfishness is the root of human depravity; every sin that can be named is only a modification of it. Avarice is selfishness grasping and hoarding? Being extravagant and wasteful is selfishness decorating and indulging itself—man makes a sacrifice to himself as a god. Laziness is that god asleep and refusing to attend to the loud calls of duty. Idolatry is but that god-- man worshipping the reflection of his own image. The sins of the flesh are only selfishness setting itself above law and gratifying itself at the expense of self-restraint. It is the same with sins of the spirit, refusing to acknowledge superiority, or to bend to any will but its own. Egotism is selfishness speaking and crime, selfishness without its mask, acting. James 4:1, "What causes quarrels and what causes fights among you? Is it not this, that your passions are at war within you?" An offensive mob or army is selfishness confederate, armed and bent on glorifying itself by violence, its object the shattering of human happiness and life. These deviant desires are but excessive self-love which recognizes no law and will be confined by no rules. This is what has filled the world with strife; the origin is selfishness, in one or other of its many forms. God’s love for man, man’s love for God, and man’s love for humanity is self-less and the true path while selfishness is the deviant path that evokes a world of disorder and sin.

The need for humanity as individuals to ascertain their responsibility to God and life granted you. If love and charity is what God requires of each of us, then selfishness, the opposite, is done on our part. It is in varying degrees the disease of our nature that must be eradicated for our souls to penetrate perfection. Not true perfection as God is but perfection that his creation can hope to be. We are given as much time as needed to gain it. Our spirit never dies, once created lives forever. God never destroys spirit and waits patiently for it to come to its senses, and He has created forever, so God is the incomparable idea of love and charity. It is on us to shed this skin of self-worship and greed through prayer and understanding nature of humanity, that it is but a tool we use to better our souls to advance toward the Kingdom of God. Our remedy here is to rid ourselves of selfishness and replace it with benevolence.
